Sony PS3 narrows Nintendo Wii sales lead in Japan

Nintendo Co Ltd’s video game console Wii outsold Sony Corp’s PlayStation 3 by a ratio of three to one in Japan in August, but Nintendo’s overwhelming lead in the market narrowed for the second consecutive month. Nintendo sold 245,653 units of the Wii in the four weeks ending August 26, compared with 81,541 units of Sony’s PS3, game magazine publisher Enterbrain said. The ratio was more than four to one in favor of the Wii in July and six to one in June.

Sony’s PS3, packed with cutting-edge technology such as a Blu-ray high-definition DVD player, has been trailing the Wii in sales since the consoles were introduced late last year, due to the PS3’s high price and a scarcity of strong game titles.

Post E3 2007: Sony, Nintendo’s comin’ for you!

Sales of Nintendo’s Wii could top that of the PlayStation 2, making it the biggest hit in the industry’s history, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said on Thursday.

Nintendo Co. Ltd. sped past Sony Corp. in market capitalization last month to become one of the 10 most valuable companies in Japan. Iwata, in an interview, also played down the threat to Nintendo’s business of a price cut in Sony’s PlayStation 3 and the introduction of a thinner PlayStation Portable.

The Wii has outsold Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 monthly since its November launch, helped by its relatively affordable $250 price tag and a motion-sensing controller that can be swung like a bat, for instance. Instead of offering lifelike graphics to appeal to hard-core gamers, Nintendo has appealed to an audience including older individuals who may not have had a previous experience with video games in their current incarnation, and the elderly with innovative but easy-to-play games.

“Sony’s PS2 sales of 100 million units is an extraordinary number that our home game console business has not achieved,” Iwata said. “But if we can make our bid to expand the gaming population a continued success, we could exceed that.”

Sony, and Nintendo say No to an AO Manhunt 2.

Manhunt 2 Nintendo Wii BoxartThe difficulty Take Two would have in finding a retailer to carry an Adults Only rated Manhunt 2 is problematic enough. However, they have one more problem: licensing.

Sony (PlayStation 2, PSP) and Nintendo (wii) both have policies which state they refuse to license games which are rated as Adults Only so they can be played on their respective hardwares. Nintendo’s own policy clearly states as follows:

“Please note that Nintendo does not sell or license games that carry the ESRB rating ‘AO’ (Adults Only).”

A spokesman for Nintendo followed up by issuing the following statement to GamePolitics:

The ESRB provides ratings to help consumers understand the content of a game before they purchase it. As stated on Nintendo.com, Nintendo does not allow any AO-rated content on its systems.

Alexander Sliwinski of Joystiq also received a response from Sony’s Dave Karraker who had the following to say:

Currently it’s SCE’s policy not to allow the playback of AO rated content on our systems.

For those of you who might be thinking, “Why not just port it to the Xbox 360?”, such would seem to be the solution, however, Microsoft has a similar policy so that would be a no-go.

Wii Internet Channel Free Period Ending

Nintendo would just like to remind you that the Wii’s Internet Channel will be a going pay-to-surf in just a little over ten days. If you haven’t gotten you’re browser by now, now would be a great time to jump on it.

The regular price for the Internet Channel will go up to 500 Wii Points after June 30.

Nintendo Wii Can’t Compete With PS3 or Xbox 360

The Nintendo Wii has been tearing up the sales charts since it was released last November. Dispite this, as reported byNexGenWars, Yasuhiro Wada, creator of Harvest Moon, believes that “Wii cannot really compete against PS3 or Xbox 360″ and that Nintendo’s own portable, the DS, is its main competiton.

Acccording to NexGenWars:

Wada is currently development director over at Rising Star Games and in a recent interview with Spong, was asked to give three pieces of advice to Nintendo to ensure that Wii continues to succeed.

“It’s very difficult. Wii cannot really compete against PS3 or 360, which is why Wii’s main competitor right now is DS. They are competing on the same level. So, Nintendo has to work harder to make Wii’s own market, as opposed to competing against DS’s market. This would be my first piece of advice to Nintendo,” he replied.

Wii Sports is the only game that can be ONLY played on Wii, not on any other console. So future games plans such as Brain Training on Wii or that type of thing – I don’t think this is such a great idea – as these games are already being played and are very popular on DS… they are not specific to the Wii.,” continued Wada.

“The third piece of advice I would give them would be to reduce the price of the DS! [compared to price of Wii] That’s my main bit of advice. I think they can do it. The made a decision on pricing and they went for a higher price. If they want to reduce the price they can,” he concluded.
