Codemasters Acquires Swordfish Studios

Warwickshire – November 14, 2008 – Facilitating an accelerated expansion of its development talent base, Codemasters® today announced it has reached an agreement with Activision Vivendi to take over Swordfish Studios, the Birmingham-based games development house. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The deal brings immediate additional resource to Codemasters’ development operations. Under the terms of the agreement Swordfish Studio’s development team will be integrated and managed as part of Codemasters’ network of studios. Trevor Williams, founder and managing director of Swordfish Studios, will continue to lead the studio reporting to Gavin Cheshire, VP, Codemasters Studios.

Carrying the Codemasters Studios imprint, the studio will create original content using the company’s proprietary EGO Engine, the technology behind racing hits Colin McRae: DiRT and Race Driver: GRID and is currently powering the highly-anticipated Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.

Far Cry 2 Ships Over 1 Million Units

– Today Ubisoft announced that Far Cry® 2, its open world first person shooter on Xbox 360™, PLAYSTATION®3 and PC, has already reached one million units sell-through worldwide in less than 3 weeks of availability at retail.

“The holiday quarter is off to a solid start with the successful launch of Far Cry 2,” said Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer at Ubisoft. “The game is well on track to achieve our expectations for the year.”

Sony’s PlayStation 2 Now An Open Platform

PlayStation 2According to Kotaku, the PlayStation 2 is officially now an open platform for development. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s developer resolutions manager George Bain has announced that it will no longer be a necessity for developers to submit their titles to Sony for approval.

The platform is now open, and this action will certain spur on a spate of low-cost titles. Bain cited territories like Russia and India that are now able to “create low-development cost titles and release them in their market”. Dev kits are still an necessity, but there are no longer PS2 licensing fees. “This has never been done before,” notes Bain. “This is something we’re actively promoting.”

Gears of War Movie Cast Interpreted By Artist

Gears of War Movie PosterArtist Chad Lakkis was apparently feeling rather anxious at the lack of news in regards to the upcoming Gears of War movie. While this film has had relatively no news, and a cast has not been chosen, what’s wrong with having a bit of fun? Taking up the role of The “Cole Train” is Lester Speight, who happens to be the voice of August Cole. Rounding out the cast is Val Kilmer as Damon Baird. Of course, what’s a film based on a shooter without Sarge himself, Dwayne Johnson as Dominic Santiago. Joining them as well is pro-wrestler David Bautista as Marcus Fenix and does he look the part.
